Happy Birthday Eric

Yesterday we took Ben for a nice long walk and decided to go out without him. He hates being left hone alone and we listened as he barked as we walked to the marina car park feeling guillty. We decided to go to the mill at Audlem as I fancied getting a cross stitch kit but they were shut. Nevermind as we're close we'll go and have lunch in the Cotton Mill in Wrenbury, you've guessed they were closed!  We ended up at the Dog and Bull in Coton not far from the marina,  Eric had fish and chips while I had the smaller portion of ham, egg and chips. I was so glad I chose the smaller portion as there was plenty on the plate and no room for dessert either, so we just had coffees before going back to find a dog fast asleep on the sofa.

Today is Eric's birthday and I made him a cake but it wasn't up to Mary Berry's standard although I used one of her recipes, but I'm sure it'll taste ok. I'll have to limit the candles or the fire alarms will go off! Happy Birthday to my other half, he's my best friend as well as my husband of 45 years and I love him to bits.

Another Week's Gone By

I enjoy reading other peoples blogs but lately there's nothing really interesting going on on NB Bendigedig so apologies in advance for boring you. It's been a quiet week on board with the boat to ourselves after our half term visitors. Our dog walks have been muddy treks along the towpath and quiet country lanes to make circular routes. We've also done the usual walks in Ellesmere wrapped up against the cold wind. Whixall is usually windy so that's nothing new.

Our new mattress arrived early, ordered on Thursday and it arrived on Monday but unfortunately the person making it didn't check the sizes. We ordered 120 x190 and 30 x190 cms and ended up with120 x 90 and 30 x 190 cms although the correct size was on the parcel label. As the mattress's were vacuum packed we opened it and watched them expand and realised their mistake. But one phone call and the incorrect size mattress was replaced with no fuss.  It was the manufacturers mistake.....must have been a Friday afternoon moment. The new mattress is due tomorrow morning in a three hour slot, so fingers crossed. Another boater is making use of the small mattress as they didn't want the bother of taking it back.

Yesterday was my birthday 66 years young! We went shopping in Wrexham although I only bought a long sleeved T shirt and a bunch of yellow roses. We had lunch out in the fish and chip cafe near the bus station as it's always delicious. I also has a haircut at 'Hair At No. 4' in King Street where Carole always cuts it how I like it......short! Thanks for the birthday cards, phone calls and texts I received. Eric said it was a cheap birthday but there was nothing I really wanted or needed.

We did the food shopping and Eric got the car hand washed in Tesco car park. He tried very hard to avoid the mud on the way back to Whixall to keep it as clean as possible. It doesn't stay clean long in the country lanes......too many muddy tractors and puddles. We did have an unexpected car wash one morning when we crossed a shallow flood on a road into Whitchurch. A little Fiat went through so we knew we'd be OK in the centre of the road.

Just gritted the pontoon as it's slippery when it's frosty, we're lucky as it's only a short stretch to hit grass so Ben can have a wee!  We always have a short walk out of the marina and up the lane first thing in the morning and then go out later for a longer walk. Ben's currently snoozing on the's a hard life !  Enjoy your day, it may be cold but the sun is shining and it's not raining!

Half Term Visitors

On Saturday we came back to the boat with extra bodies in the car, daughter Lisa and granddaughter Gwen came to stay. On the way back we had to get some food as we nothing on-board for tea and no fresh food either. The Coop provided cottage pies which made tea a quick and easy meal . I booked Sunday lunch at 'The Cotton Arms' for the four of us and it was delicious as usual. The chocolate puddings with melt in the middle chocolate were delicious too. Gwen has an excellent pudding tummy so found room for chocolate pudding.

Gwen came with me dog walking on the Prees Branch or should I saw mud larking and Gwen's wellies were muddier than Ben's feet. He managed to say fairly clean. I took some photographs and Gwen took one of me so I'll share them if blogger will let me, it can be temperamental. Today they uploaded.

Great News My Lost Purse Was Handed In.

We braved the rain on Saturday morning to drive down to Wales for a few days, it was bad on the roads with the rain causing a lot of water on the roads and on occasions it was like the log flume at Barry Island going through the water. We obviously took our time and came down the scenic route via Llandrindod Wells where we stopped to walk the dog and get some lunch. It was a paddle for Ben on the paths alongside the river although we weren't the only people braving the elements to walk their dogs. Our luck was in as I went in The Strand Cafe by the car park to ask if we could have a meal accompanied by Ben the dog and they said yes. He led down by our table and waited for some sausage from our all day breakfasts as it was too hot!  Refreshed we continued on our way popping in to see Paula who made us a cuppa, before we arrived at Clare's house.

On Sunday we walked the dog at Tredegar Park and then had a chicken stir fry for lunch. Later Gwen and Lisa came to visit, so hugs all round. It was lovely to see them both.

On Monday Eric took the car to Kia for a service while I walked the dog in the rain, not that Ben was pleased about that so we didn't go far. It was a strange day as we waited for the phone call to collect the car. Paula was kind enough to pick him up from the garage and take him back later as it's not the easiest place to get to.

Later we popped into Sainsbury's to get some flowers as we were going  to eat at Ben's Mum's.  Unfortunately I lost my purse in Sainsbury's. When I realised we went back and CCTV showed me leaving the store with it peeping out of my handbag, so I must have lost it in the car park........gutted. I stopped my cards which was a bit of a nightmare as they needed a card number but finally put me through to a person and it was sorted. I rang 101 to report it lost just in case anyone handed it in.

Good news this morning, Abergavenny Police rang, it had been handed in with everything still in it. Somebody up there likes me!!!

Moored At Whixall Marina

Well the months seem to be flying by, February already. We've spent the last week not feeling so good, Eric has a chest infection and I just have an annoying cough. He has antibiotics and should be feeling better soon. I invarably get a cough in the winter as I have asthma, roll on the better weather. It's been hot drinks and keeping cosy, although I still have to walk the dog but fresh air is supposed to do you good!

Yesterday we went for a ride in the car just to get out of the boat and ended up at McDonalds for a take out. Ben had a bit of my cheeseburger, which was just what I fancied, as he came too.  Thinking of food we had an amazing Sunday lunch at Sun Trevor last Sunday, the roast beef was delicious as was the desserts. Highly recommended £12.95 for two courses.

I've been online looking for a new mattress for our bed found Made2measure based in Stafford and contacted them about a split mattress for a 150 x 90 bed. They emailed straight back with a price and message  it'll be ready in 5-7 days once I put in the order. Last time we had a foam topped pocket spring mattress which needs replacing, so we are having a memory foam topped foam mattress.....I hope I'm not disappointed.
